With Charlotte at a sleepover last night, we decided to take Emma on a date – just the three of us. Of course with Mockingjay Part One just opening, it HAD to be that. We were really scared about how busy it would be, but thankfully Landmark Cinemas had a ton of screenings. We only got there at 7pm for a 7:30 showing, but made sure we found seats before getting food. Good thing too, because the theatre was packed by the start of the movie!
At two hours long, I actually felt that Mockingjay was a great length. I had heard some reviews that it wasn’t very exciting, but we all thought there was plenty of action. But like the book – most of the excitement is saved for the last half (or Part Two). Some new characters were introduced, we saw more of Gale (yawn) and less of Peeta (boo). We loved the addition of Effie, (she didn’t show up until the end of the book) she is a very funny character and had some great lines. It was surreal and sad to see Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a nice touch to see that the movie was dedicated to him. Woody Harrelson as usual was a mix of great acting and what MUST be his real personality. He makes a great Haymitch.
All in all it was fast-paced and exciting, and a great set up for the final film in the franchise. Plus the trailers at the beginning were fantastic – The Hobbit? Cinderella? YES PLEASE!
