I’m Getting Crafty!

I feel like every second post is Pinterest, Pinterest, Pinterest. But I can’t help it. I love that site so much, I try to put it out in the universe every day that I should somehow be working for them. Until then however, it’s making me a much happier, craftier person. A better mom. I plan meals, I do stuff with my kids that I find there. I’m reaching a much better work/play balance and honestly Pinterest is a huge part. YAY!

So I have a Christmas Pinterest board, which I’m constantly adding to daily. It motivates me to do some fun decorating around the house, to bake some treats and it all around puts me into a very festive mood. This week I’ve been working on the mantle over the fireplace. Since we renovated here, I just kind of stuck up some empty painted frames that I got on Etsy. (Another favourite site, don’t get me started). I took those down and added some crafty, Pinterest-y items that I MADE MYSELF!
O HOLY NIGHT!

First off, I bought some paper-mache deer for 50% off at Michaels. They were a gold color so of course we painted them white with white acrylic paint.

Next, was the felt trees. 3 different colors of craft felt, 3 different sizes of styrofoam cones, and a box of dressmakers pins. Lots of cutting felt into little circles. Lots and lots of cutting. I had a claw hand when I was done. When cutting felt, I learned it’s easier to use tape or a pin to hold it to the template you’re cutting from.

Then it was some pinecones, my girls painted them to look like they were snowy. They loved this job.
Charlotte also painted the wooden believe sign we bought.

Finally, it was star time! I bought painting paper from the kid’s section at Michaels, which is WAY cheaper than buying card stock from the scrapbook section, and the texture is so much nicer. Yay me! Then I scored each star from each tip, and folded. Easy peasy 3D stars! I taped them to some ribbon and hung from the ceiling. (I actually started by gluing them to feel craftier but it was a huge pain in the butt and the tape worked so much better) My friend Tamara made this tutorial and is super crafty awesome, so definitely check out her blog!

All in all it was a simple, fun project that was great to do with kids. And now we have a pretty mantle for the holidays!
