What I did in Vegas (part 1)

I have to make this a two-parter so I don’t overload you all with photos.

While in Vegas, I went to a place called the Neon Graveyard with a group of photographers. It’s a “museum” where all the old Vegas signs go to die.
It’s honestly one of the most awesome places I’ve ever been, I absolutely loved it there!
I think it would be perfect for a fun and funky family session, I would love to travel back for that.

Here are just a few of my shots from the day, I could shoot there for a month straight and not get tired of that place!

A wedding in Red Deer

I assisted my good friend Deanna Hall on a wedding yesterday in Red Deer.
The day was absolutely beautiful, the couple was gorgeous, the wedding party fun and relaxed.
It was a beautiful ceremony, and it touched me beyond words to see the groom have such an emotional reaction to seeing his bride walk down the aisle.
Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your magical day!

Jesh De Rox . . . well . . . kinda rocks.

Last week I had the privilege to attend the Edmonton Jesh De Rox workshop. I met some wicked cool Alberta photographers and one awesomely talented Torontonian. Is that what they are called? I found myself being moved without meaning to, inspired by things totally unexpected, and came home to a family that I feel like I love even more than when I left. Jesh has the power to make every person see the ultimate preciousness in themselves, and in others. If you haven’t heard of him, get your butt over to his site and see some of the most influential photography in the world right now.

Our special guest was John Michael Cooper, a Las Vegas wedding photographer that crosses every imaginable boundary in his work, and creates brilliant, controversial, beautiful imagery. He’s also a wicked cool guy, who was tons of fun and was VERY inspiring to me – I have a few personal projects in the works and got some valuable advice from John during my personal mentoring session.

I don’t have tons of photos to share, even though it was a photography workshop – it was really more about people and relationships. Take a look at what I do have though:

One of our assignments was a self-portrait, this was me in West Ed, trying to get to Galaxyland before it closed – thereby dropping my poor cone on the ground. Ben and Jerry were nice enough to give me another scoop for free though.

Jesh has some amazing clients, and we were fortunate enough to have 2 of them come in to talk with us, and then let us each spend 5 minutes with them to get some images.

And finally, our last assignment was to get a portrait of John, which was intimidating for me, but a pretty cool experience. He’s actually a fantastic subject, whereas a lot of photographers feel very uncomfortable in front of the camera.

It was a week that I could never explain properly, but will never forget – and I’m so blessed to have met Jesh, John, the workshop attendees, and the fabulous, fantastic Theresa – who I truly miss and wish lived closer to me.

A wedding in Stettler

My super good friend Deanna of Deanna Hall Photography invited me to come and be her second shooter at a wedding this past weekend in Stettler.
She let me roam around time with the groomsmen before the ceremony, and I know that they thought I was extra crazy when I told them we were going to the Real Canadian Superstore. Especially since it’s called Extra Foods in Stettler, lol.
I had such an awesome time – not only was the wedding party fun and up for anything, but Deanna was so easy to work with, I am so excited to do it all over again with her in July. Thanks so much for inviting me D!

Photography Tip O’ The Day

I’m going to be adding a page on the blog soon for photographers, but here’s a tip for moms and photogs alike.

If you take a look at your photography, either in your scrapbooks, photo albums or even your digital files – you may notice that they all look similar.
If this is case, you may be stuck in a photography rut – and it’s time to get out of your comfort zone!

If you are taking all close ups, try backing up and getting a full-length shot.

Conversely, if all your photos seem to be from far away, try getting super close and see what happens!

You can also try doing both – it’s called getting coverage. That way if you decide later you want a close-up, or decide you want a full-length, you’ve got both!

If you’re not feeling inspired by what you’ve been taking photos of lately, try looking around the familiar – and seeing it in a new way. If you’re taking lots of photos of your children, step outside and see what you can find.

Don’t be afraid to try something new. It will recharge you and get you taking better pictures. Have fun!
