This year for the fall mini-sessions, I only met two new clients. Every single other session was previous clients. It makes me feel so happy to see all these families again, year after year.
(And meet the new ones too!)

I’ve known Blake since she was born and she’s been my little guinea pig ever since.
I love her so much that I seriously consider offering to babysit her, which frankly I don’t ever offer to anyone.
Even my KIDS love this kid, Blake’s mom came over for a party and my girls played with her for 2 hours straight.
She’s just that cute.

This is a family that I’ve had the immense pleasure of watching grow over the years. I can’t even call them clients anymore, because they honestly are more like friends.
I love having sessions with them, full of laughing and joking and spontaneity. We went to Fish Creek park here in Calgary this fall for some fun portraits.

If you are even half the procrastinator that I am, you may sometimes find yourself looking at a daunting task and just pretending it’s not there.
That’s kind of what happened with this blog: I realized that I hadn’t written in a month and stuck my head in the sand. Then one month became two and I started having yucky feelings because I had so many sessions, so many things to blog.
I’ve been so crazy busy this fall season, I really needed to focus on getting client orders out the door, but it really is no excuse for such a long absence. All I can say is I do feel terrible, but not for long, because here I am blogging again.
Yippee! (this yippee may just be to myself as I’m not sure if anyone will be coming back here after such a long break, lol)

Anyway, I have a TON of sessions to post. I think over 20? I might need to combine things. I’m almost done with the holiday season, the last orders of the year go out the door this weekend! So that means lots of time to blog. Or read blogs. Or visit Pinterest. But I’ll try to blog. Promise.

Since I am a rebel and a rule-breaker (I’m not at all), I’m not even going to post a session for this post. It’s just going to be about a fun little thing that’s going around my neighbourhood. We were ‘Elfed’, which is exactly like when we were ‘Boo’ed/Ghosted’ last year at Halloween. Except maybe a bit cuter and with more fun presents.

The girls and I had a great time running around leaving presents on doorsteps. As Charlotte put it: ‘Is this where we ring the doorbell and run away? I LOVE that game!’

Mini Sessions Are Back!

It’s that time of year!

This year I’m doing something a little different. As some of you know, one of my very dear friends was diagnosed with ovarian cancer just under two weeks ago. I took a trip to Portland this past week to be with her during surgery and I plan to go back several times to help her through chemo.
Jen is a fellow photographer, and as you can imagine, this will put her out of work for several months. I would like to donate the session fees from both days of mini sessions to her and her two boys to help ease the financial burden just a bit.

If you are interested in booking a mini session, please just email me at info@freshsugar.ca and let me know your preferred date and time and we’ll set you up. Because newsletter subscribers and previous clients get first crack at things like this, I’m very pleased to say that we only have 2 spots left this Saturday and 5 left in October, so please email me right away if you’d like a session!

Mini sessions are $250 and include a 20 minute session and 10-15 images in your gallery. You will also receive one digital image to use as you choose! The sessions are on Saturday, September 17th and October 1st. 10am-4pm.

Alberta Children’s Hospital – 2011

This year was another full day of meeting the most amazing kids around. Each one had their own spunky personality and a light in their eyes that was difficult to miss. If you are ever looking for a worthy organization to donate to you, I strongly urge you to consider the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. A gift to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation will fund excellence in family centred child health programs, specialized life-saving equipment and advanced pediatric research. It’s an important cause because you really never know if you or someone you love will need the services of this incredible facility.

Sorry about the large post, there were a LOT of kids this year!

Alberta Children’s Hospital – 2010

I wrote about my experience with the Children’s Hospital earlier this year. It’s been a special place to me since Emma was very little, and it’s been one of my greatest pleasures to donate my services to them these past two years.

I get to spend the day meeting real kids who have spent a lot of time within the walls of the hospital. As a parent, the thought frightens me to death, but to see these children have such sunny personalities and a resilience that is truly amazing, it makes me realize just how important this hospital is to Calgary.

Last month I spent another full day meeting these incredible children, but before I blog those images, I wanted to show you a few of last year’s photos.

This month’s theme is Framed. I found this one kind of difficult this week, and honestly was thinking about skipping this round. We just got a new trampoline yesterday though so I thought I would try something with that. I decided to “frame” Charlotte in between the zipper opening.

Superhero Dork

Yesterday morning I was doing a little work before enjoying Mother’s Day and Charlotte came downstairs with a couple of my photo props on. I immediately sent her back upstairs to put on a supergirl costume so we could get a few photos. It was a quick 5 minute shoot, but I am loving the fact that I have been inspired lately to take more images of my own kids – that aren’t iPhone photos, lol!

What’s great about this new energy and inspiration is that it’s translating new ideas for client sessions as well. I have a ton of new ideas that I want to try this spring and summer, now that it’s finally warm enough to go outside in Calgary! Blog Carousel – Monochrome

This month’s topic is Monochrome. I knew that the easiest way to do monochrome would be to turn a photo into black and white, but for some reason the word pink just kept shouting out to me.
I decided to try an idea that I’ve had on my idea list for a couple of years now, some sparkling sugar as lipstick. My daughter has the BEST lips so I knew she would have to be the model.
To keep with the monochrome theme, I painted her nails a glittery pink and grabbed my macro lens and off we went.

Looking at the images afterwards surprised me. My absolute favorite image for this idea was slightly blurred and the sugar crystals were a bit messier than I had planned. But I love it’s messy imperfection.

I also loved another image that I will also post, even though I chose to keep the color intact. I sometimes get images of Emma that just shock me. She’s growing up and fast.
